JUST FOR YOUR INFORMATION
HOME READING
Your child has brought home a bag with photocopied reading books. There are 4 different levels in each bag. One or two should be easy for your child, and 2 should be more difficult. The purpose is to have easier ones to practice fluency and improve confidence in reading skills. The others are to improve reading strategies, such as decoding (sounding out). If your child cannot read the book, please read it to him/her. Please inform me if the books as a whole are too easy or too difficult. These book bags need to be returned on Tuesday so that I have enough time to get them switched before library on Wednesday. Please make sure your child takes care of these books... they are not for colouring and they need to be in good condition for all the children to read. Thanks! POETRY BOOKS Please return the poetry books on Monday mornings so I can add the new one for the week. These poems we will be reading all week in class. It is a great way to introduce phonics skills and other reading skills. Your child can "read" the poems at home during the week. LIBRARY This year Library time is on Wednesday with Mrs. Letendre, so please ensure you send back your child's book by then so that they may take a new one out. DOLCH SIGHT WORDS I have sent home word rings with these words your child needs to practice. The goal is to have 98% success in recall of all words in the pre-primer, primer and grade 1 lists by the end of grade 1 for the grade 1 students, and 98% success of the grade 2 list for the grade 2 students. (see My Files Dolch checklist). These will come home with the home reading books, and need to be returned with the books so that I can test the students each week on their progress and add more words as needed. I will take off the known words and send them home with the child as "ha-ha-I-know-these-words." You make keep these in a separate baggie and review them now and then. *
